Now one wouldn't think a political group like P.E. would use gimmicks, but they actually used more than a few. Flavor Flav being first and foremost on the list. The clock, the glasses, everything about Flav was just a gimmick. Second the militant dancers. Third the legendary PE logo. One could claim the political stance was a gimmick, but Chuck has put in enough work to say that claim is outlandish...
Ah, the Wu, a lot of their gimmicks are tied to the whole martial arts motif of the group. The name Wu Tang, for starters. Calling Staten Island Shaolin as if anyone actually called it that before they came along. The Kung Fu movie samples. The 7 or so members in the group. Before them there were crews, but those crews usually only came together for one or two songs. For them to do whole albums together? Gimmick. Remember the fang gold fronts? Gimmick. Remember the second set of names i.e. Method Man aka Johnny Blaze? A gimmick other rappers copy to this very day.
Keith Murray another EPMD alum only had one gimmick that I'm aware of, the whole complicated, even made up words thing he did. Beautifulest is not a word you'll ever find in the dictionary.
